Shopping for Bali stonework and stone carvings in Ubud

Shopping for Bali stonework and stone carvings in Ubud can be a journey. As with buying paintings in Ubud there is an entire road in Ubud dedicated to stone workers. (See the map below) Any taxi driver will know where it is.

It is a long road so it might be worthwhile going the whole length of the road slowly then coming back and stopping where you want.

Along this road you will find statues that look like they have been there for decades, covered in lichen and moss, along with ones that are being carved as you look.

If you are looking for the ancient look, which includes the lichen and moss, but a statue you like is only new, or is too clean, an easy way to get the lichen look is to pour yoghurt onto the stone. Lichen and moss will grow fast, over a matter of weeks it will be well established.

Anyway, if you want to ship them internationally they will need to be cleaned totally of all things growing on them, especially to Australia.

Buddhas, Hindu gods, animals and pretty much any other style of stone work is available here.

Mostly it is the local expat scene that buys the statues as obviously stone is very heavy, and unless you are shipping a container (either with a big mix of stuff like pavers, tiles or furniture, the shipping costs is prohibitive.

And of course statues can also be too heavy for the standard car to carry, so get your pieces delivered, usually at around 100-200k down to Denpasar etc.

That way also they are responsible for getting the statue to your place intact, which is far better than having a 100k object rolling around in your car, or trying to get that out at the other end without hurting a back or two.

You can pretty order whatever you want – 3D statues, relief carvings, anything, just your imagination is required.

Stone carving in Bali is by hand, and it is physically hard work as well as difficult, so you must allow plenty of time for your order to be done. So if you are in a timetable on your visit to Bali, go up and place your order sooner that later.

Shopping for Bali stonework and stone carvings is a bit of a trip back in time, as if the timelessness of stone grows on you.

The thing is to bargain. I couldn't believe the number of stonework shops. In Ubud, we drove down the road dedicated to selling stonework. There were tens of thousands of fountains, statues, and other stone works, like friezes.

Hi, I wasn't able to enlarge/zoom in onto the map to see the name of the street.
