I recently had a gorgeous dining experience at Ubud restaurant Spice by Chris Salans the inspiration behind the award winning Ubud restaurant Mozaic in Bali.

Opened mid 2015, Spice by Chris Salans is a relatively small bistro type restaurant just opposite Starbucks on Jl Raya Ubud in central offering a high quality dining experience.

Non smoking, open for lunch and dinner 6 days a week (closed Mondays), Spice by Chris Salans is a popular ‘return to’ restaurant in Ubud.

Simple and elegant, with perhaps 6 tables and a nice bar at which you can comfortably dine, Bali restaurant Spice by Chris Salans seems a bit of an experimental restaurant, with the food being a fusion between Western style food with Asian, particularly Balinese flavours.

The beef carpaccio was super!

The menu is actually very simple, although not laid out in the usual manner with appetizer, entrée and mains. There are three raw dishes to choose from, three breads and sliders, four ‘two legs and four legs’ dishes, three fins and shells and three sides.

We ordered the beef carpaccio (see pic above), snapper carpaccio, tempura prawns, grilled rib eye steak and fried Singaraja rice and the chef also gave us a delicious chicken special. There are photos of all of these dishes at the bottom of the page.

The beef carpaccio with rendang flavouring, plus something sweet, was stunning, super delicious. The snapper carpaccio with tamarind croutons and rujak fruit was also up there.

The tempura prawns were succulent in a way I had only experienced via a barbeque before but these were way tastier (yes, prawns CAN BE sensational!) while the grilled rib eye served with three Indonesian sambals was a taste and texture delight (see pic below).

The chicken was a kind of chicken nuggets (tho that term has too much baggage to do these any justice) and rujak – spicey fruit. The Singaraja rice was tasty, light and fluffy.

Having a nice glass of an Aussie shiraz enhanced the dinner.

We rounded off the dinner with the spiced fruit salad and were very content.

Author of Mozaic, French Cuisine and Asian Flavours which is full of awesome looking recipes, Chris also runs cooking classes and seminars in Ubud. Along with the menu there is a page explaining the various Indonesian spices and sambals which is also at the bottom of this page.

I must say that I was very impressed dining here at Spice by Chris Salans. Dinner for two, eating exquisitely, came to around 600k, excluding drinks. Which is reasonable for the dining experience.

I was very impressed with the food, the service, the simplicity of the setting. Beautifully done.

Now this is a special place. Really interesting food and presentation of food. A bit more exxy than most other Ubud restaurants but worth it for the experience. Perfectly cooked rib eye fillet was awesome. Will come again next time I am in town
