Gili Air organic restaurant Scallywags
Gili Air organic restaurant Scallywags is the centre of fine dining on the Gili Air foreshore and also a great place to have that breakfast that keeps you going all day.

Situated about 300 meters to the east (going right when you get off the ferry) of the jetty, it’s easy to find and easier to enjoy.
Scallywags restaurant advertises itself as an organic restaurant, with its organic produce coming daily from Bali.
Which is a bit tricky; because there are no meaningful organic standards in Indonesia so there is not way of knowing the veracity of food labelled organic.
Yes, food may even be grown organically (farmers’ understanding of what organic means varies immensely in Indonesia) but the farmer may have no idea (or interest) in what happens upstream, as the water used may be contaminated with pesticides, fertilisers or even engin oil or other industrial contaminants, and so nobody knows.
However, the fact that Scallywags promotes itself as organic says they care about food and food quality.
I have eaten at Scallywags maybe 4-5 times, and each time have walked away happy and satisfied, if a little tipsy from forgetting that cocktails are not fruit drinks!!
There is a raw-ish Tataki tuna and rocket salad that I just love. The beef fajitas are also good.
Choosing a piece of fish for the grill and loading up on salad for 90k is also a good deal.
And cocktails that are delicious and also reasonably priced. They use authentic alcohol in their drinks as against the methanol that can occasionally appear in spirits sold in cheaper locations.
There is an indoor dining area as well as tables on the beach, all level and comfortable. Also some shady places where you can eat out of the morning sun.
You can have a delicious gourmet dinner for less than 100k, and cocktails for 60 or so are great value. And the food is delicious and fresh.

There is the usual (for Gili Air restaurants) table of seafood waiting to be chosen, cooked and eaten, on the road out the front of Gili Air Scallywags, as well as an a la carte menu.
One of Gili Air Scallywags’ mottos is to invite customers to be a little naughty, (as in their name, Scallywags – a little naughty!!) or so the manageress told me.
Which I already was, having complained about the apparent lack of alcohol in one of our cocktails. Naughtier overtures failed but were received graciously.
This apparent lack of alcohol was remedied without too much fuss, good service that was reinforced by a visit from the smiling and cheerful manageress, so that for me is a plus. Every restaurant messes up sometimes, so it is how they deal with it that defines it.
And not because they knew they were being reviewed, cause at that time they didn’t.
For breakfast there is an all-you-can-eat buffet for 80k which is a good deal.
I had a big breakfast full of eggs, bacon (surprisingly served on a Muslim island), and sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast, juice and coffee, all for around 90k.
Be warned though. If you are catching boat back to Bali, pay attention to the wind and the waves!! Having a fully belly on a rough boat trip really sucks!! As does an empty one! No way out really, if the ferry crossing is rough.
The spotless kitchen is completely visible from the street which reinforces the clean food feeling.
Great venue, good food, good service and a quality dining experience.
Gili Air Lombok organic restaurant Scallywags is definitely one of my favourite Gili Air restaurants, and a must visit for everyone who comes to Gili Air off the northwestern corner of Lombok and who likes organic and clean food.
There is also a Scallywags on Gili Trawangan that has the same quality but without the beach table settings.

I visited Scallywags again in July 2014 and was amazed how it had grown in size. Seating for perhaps an extra 40 people at night, and it was full, reservations only. mmmm
